Living with Anteaters

Aurora: Januaray 11th was my coronation day again. That means I'm at least 14 years old. That's like 95 human years. I lead a quiet life now. I move slower and my eyes are a bit cloudy but I enjoy my food and lounging on my shelf at night. I still ring the treat bell for some buttermilk now and then. I sometimes still miss Pua. I do wish the human fed me more but she says I don't need to grow any more. But over all my twilight years are pleasant ones.

The fox felt the best course of action was too panic! This means pacing in your safe place.










Option 2 is to hibernate till it's over.

Beaker enjoyed napping by the fire, which may have aided in his recovery from a recent illness.











Jake enjoyed the fire as well. Though he did not like being locked in at night due to the door to my room being open to allow some heat to make it in, that meant no cat door for him.









On day 2 the neighbor tried to get his small, low car out and got stuck. He put his chains on and got more stuck. There was nowhere to go anyway as the highway was closed.

There were a lot of lifted trucks with big wheels coming and going. I think they were enjoying a snow day.

That night Aurora ventured out the open door into the house. She went to each door but they did not open for her so she went to the living room and looked it over. She found it inadequate and so returned to her room and that was the end of her explorations. She did find the human being up and about when it was dark upsetting. The rules are clearly defined. If the lights are out the human is to be in bed.

I also covered the floor in blankets and clothes and it raised the room temp to 68F from lower 60's I know this sounds comfortable to most but mid 60's is the bare minimum for a healthy anteater. She dealt with the chill by being less active but did continue eating her nightly meal and snacks.

By day three there were a lot less trucks. I guess it wasn't much fun any more. I had put snow in the fridge but on this day moved food into containers and put them in the snow outside. The fox continued to panic in the mornings and if there was commotion, like The Deep Voice talking by the door(my dad). But was mostly settled into hiding in the window.




Beaker had enjoyed the fire time snuggles but got needy and would bark in a panic if I was not visible and he heard anything.

But over all Beaker and Jake kind of enjoyed it

Day 4 Still no power. Highway still closed. But things were a bit more routine so I rode the stationary bike. Beaker watched at first then went to lay by the fire to watch for my return.

Around 4pm I somehow heard Ikigai's alarm whistle from the warm room and came to him. He flopped down for me to pet him for quite awhile. Guess he was scared from being alone so much as I stayed mostly in the living room by the fire. He's agoraphobic and doesn't want to leave the room. In fact his night time contact calls to me, though our routine, were fewer and whisper calls. His ears were light and not his usual bright pink as they conserved heat.

After petting he relaxed more and napped in his hammock.

At 7pm there was a flash of hope and then the lights went out after a few seconds. They continued to flash on and off through the night as they tested the load the city would draw before finally turning it back on in the morning.

It took a couple more days for the highway to open.


Our tree and rose bush suffered some damage but not as much as some. Many trees fell, some had their limbs pealed down from snow load.

March 8 · Giving Mom some loving pokes



March 11 · Aurora was shocked to find Mom up playing with me in the nest but after a careful inspection she turned her back on her to eat her ants then returned to her box till lights out.

After flashing the camera around under the bed to find my glasses I discovered Aurora plugs her entrance hole to her box with her blanket. Now no one can disturb her.

March 12 · Aurora: I thought the time was supposed to jump forward an hour? But I got up and the human was still up! Back in my box till lights out.

March 21 · Thanks for the egg sandwich mom. It's yummy but maybe you could blend it next time.

Oh you were getting my supplements? Even better. Blue cheese!

Now off to the closet today.

March 26 · Aurora: I was on my way out from under the bed when the human began making a loud fuss "Ew, gross, OMG, ah" I continued on to the closet but a fuss continued to be made and the lights came back on so I returned to my box.

I mean I get it the dog(Beaker) chose that moment to up chuck on your arm. But this is my time. You're supposed to be quite.

March 27 · Aurora starts the day in the closet so I have left the washer the last couple day to be with her then when mom gets up she leaves the closet for her box but I have had some nice play and snuggle time with mom in the closet. We need a go pro to strap to her head so you can see me play.

April 2 · Lots of play and snuggled time last night. At one point mom stuck her pinky in my ear and that felt so good. Then I smelled this wonderful stuff on her finger and licked it off. I kept poking an clicking at her finger but I couldn't get more out of it. That stuff was great. Mom needs to share more of it.

April 4 · Ikigai the fennec fox has arrived. Beaker is skeptical. Aurora and I(Pua) don't care long as he doesn't get into our business but dinner was late last night.

April 8 · Yes I'm still here. The new fellow found his way across the cat walk and into the log activity center as I was entering it myself. I just gave him a sniff and went about my business. He's not Beaker so he's okay. He kind of reminds me of Jake as a kitten.

Then mom took him down and got me my blue cheese. Well he zoomed back up and came to share my blue cheese. I was surprised but was okay with it and went back to eating. But the little snot made a possessive move so I went to mom for help and she put him into his condo for the night.

April 8 · Aurora: The new little rat tried to come say "hi" to me while I was on the way to my box this morning but the servant held him back. Good but then he realized I was in the box and was digging at the bed next to the box. I was forced to leave my box to make my displeasure known. The situation was remedied by his having a time out in his condo wile the servant went off to do something then he was over it after that. I guess the service wasn't too bad today.

April 13 · Aurora and I went on a fridge raid last night but it was latched. Aurora waited on the ground to keep watch while I climbed up the desk to better try and open it. I got stuck. Mom came and pet Aurora. Once Aurora noticed she left. Some guard she turned out to be. Then mom rescued me.

Just before nail trims. I took the tips off her big claws but they didn't want to yield to clippers for any decent amount. So I'll have to break out the Dremmel later and file away at them a bit at a time. Aurora sheds hers naturally so they don't get too long. I guess Pua just has tougher nails.
