They are expensive and a lot of work. They do like the company of another of their kind though you can raise just one long as you spend plenty of time with it. They can be trained to a box or pee pads but not 100% and some like to pee their beds.

I had Pua by herself then someone with a male had to rehome him due to family health so he came here. When he died we tried to get another male but it never worked out for various reasons. Aurora wasn't planned. Someone tried to import her without going through proper channels so she was placed here.Tamandua Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10542453483618263448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18422671.post-3956335141892393202017-03-06T14:09:43.659-08:002017-03-06T14:09:43.659-08:00Im in love with these guys! With the diet I have outlined in this care sheet Pua has made it to 11.5 and still going strong. I had her x-rayed at 9yrs and her spine was nice and clear of issues. Tamandua fed cat and dog food often have to be put down around 9yrs from the hyperostosis due to retinol. If these tamandua being fed milk replacer as adults are dying younger from hyperostosis then the milk being fed as adults would be even worse than being fed cat and dog food. In which case maybe goats milk with some taurine would be best of the three option for infants as it is lower in retinol.Tamandua Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10542453483618263448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18422671.post-91252755865993019992016-12-20T12:57:36.843-08:002016-12-20T12:57:36.843-08:00We do not have a published analysis of tamandua mi...We do not have a published analysis of tamandua milk to know what the nutrients of a replacement milk should be for them. Kitten milk has been used to raise them successfully so is considered okay as they grow up and don't die. It has taurine which they need for proper development of their heart which puppy milk replacers do not, though some have been raised on puppy formula as well. Some have also been raised on goats milk. Any of those milks is considered okay because they survive to become adults more often than not when fed one of them.

Until a zoo milks their tamandua and has the nutritional content of the milk analyzed "okay" is the best we have and we do not know what would be good or best. I would go with cat replacement formula or the goats milk over dog formula due to the taurine issue, or you could use puppy and add taurine.

I agree adults should not get kitten milk and should be weaned off of it and onto food as soon as possible. And they should not be fed any cat or dog foods because they are all high in retinol. Retinol has been proven to cause hyperostosis of the spine very quickly, lesions can be seen in as little as a month in a tamandua on a high retinol diet like cat food. Debilitation is usually not seen till many years later when it is too late to remedy the issue.

If a zoo must use a commercial food I would recommend TermAnt by Mazuri. I know of a tamandua who was raised on that stuff and is now 22yrs old.Tamandua Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10542453483618263448noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18422671.post-38339896782958251802016-12-20T05:42:26.149-08:002016-12-20T05:42:26.149-08:00Hi, I need your advice about taandua's diets. ...Hi, I need your advice about taandua's diets. A lot of zoos in Asia have reported that they lost their tamanduas for hyperostosis. What they do in common is to keep feeding kitten milk replacer even after they get adult and we suspect that they are getting too much Ca and vitamin A from the milk. You mentioned that Tamanduas don't need as much those nutrition as cats but how come feeding kitten milk to baby tamandua is ok?

Thank you!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08929369541934187483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18422671.post-58921735542343562802016-04-15T21:31:33.582-07:002016-04-15T21:31:33.582-07:00it's good ND I SUPPORT his cheeseit's good ND I SUPPORT his cheesecheese supporternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18422671.post-1388411410220218922015-12-25T01:22:00.776-08:002015-12-25T01:22:00.776-08:00What a wonderful post.
